History of Kill Devil Hills, NC

Many tales have been told about the origin of the town’s name. Many believe its namesake came from a shipwrecked boat off of the coast that was filled with strong rum that could “kill the devil.” The name stuck and started to appear on maps in the early 1800s. In 1900, the Wright Brothers began testing their gliders in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk. 3 years later, the brothers accomplished their goal and Kill Devil Hills became the home of the Wright Brothers Memorial in 1930. The town remained relatively small until the establishment of Avalon Pier in the 1958 and hotel and motel development in the 1960s. Over the years, the town as grow into a popular vacation destination and now host over 6,000 residents.
