History of Buxton, NC

Similar to its neighboring towns, Buxton has always been a hot spot for fishing and lumber. Algonquin Indian tribes first inhabited this area, followed by English settlers who were able to live off the natural resources of the land. Buxton's ever changing, shallow coastline proved problematic for those traveling by boat. This area, known as the Diamond Shoals, became notorious for shipwrecks. In 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built to light the way for ships at sea and boasts as the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Due to beach erosion, the lighthouse was successfully moved 2,780 feet toward the inland in 1999.
