History of Stumpy Point, NC

Few residents lived on Stumpy Point before the WWII era. After the war, commercial fishing opportunities drew former and new residents to the area. Infrastructure was built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, connecting the community to neighboring towns. During the Cold War, the government was in search of a bombing range for military pilots and decided on Stumpy Point as their new location. A 55,000-acre section of the uninhabited mainland to the west of the town was established as the Stumpy Point Bombing Range in November 1963. Despite new developments on Stumpy Point, the town remains as a small commercial fishing village made up of local waterman and year-round residents.
