History of Nags Head, NC

There are many legends told about how Nags Head got its name. A majority believe that it was named after a trick pirates used to draw ships in to shore. Pirates would secure lanterns around the necks of mules. The light would lead ships in to the shallow shores, causing them to shipwreck, making it easier for pirates to loot their ships.

In 1830, the town became established as the first tourist colony on the island, with hotels popping up in 1838. Oceanfront cottages were built in the early 1900s, changing the landscape of the village. Many of these homes are still around today on Historic Cottage Row. The town continued to develop over the years, with a big boom in real estate development in the 1970s. A developer from Maryland began spreading the word up north about the beautiful beaches and potential on the Outer Banks. The town has been a thriving vacation destination ever since.
